With its larger-than-average size and strong beak, the hawfinch is the muscled one among finches. Research has demonstrated that it can exert a pressure of up to 50 kilograms with its beak. Easy to crack open a cherry stone then! The hawfinch is shy and watchful and spends most of its time high up in large trees. Its discreet behaviour and undemonstrative call make the hawfinch something of a difficult bird to spot.
