The scientific name of the jay, Garrulus glandarius, can roughly be translated as ‘chattering acorn seeker’. This however only typifies the jay in winter, as during the breeding season it remains remarkably silent. Originally a somewhat shy woodland bird, it can now also be observed inhabiting many urban areas. In wood areas, the jay functions as the intruder-alarm: many animals react to its call by going into hiding. Jays are well known for their striking blue-black striped wing markings.
