The red-backed shrike is a summer bird, preferring rough, semi-open terrain with thickets of shrubs and young trees. Most importantly however is the presence of larger insects such as beetles, bees and bumblebees, as they form the main part of its diet. It will also feed on lizards, small mammals and chicks. The red-backed shrike is sometimes also referred to as the ‘butcher-bird’ for its habit of impaling its prey on thorns or other spinose shrubs to consume later.
