The waxwing inhabits the dense taigas of Northern Russia and the wooded regions of Scandinavia. When the berries in these regions are finished for the winter, the waxwing migrates south to the Netherlands. An invasion of large numbers is an irregular occurrence, indeed there are winters when the bird is rarely spotted. In a previous era, the bird was considered an ill omen, a harbinger of bad times, prompting superstition and fear. They are about the same size as a starling and sport a remarkable quiff.
