European green woodpeckers are sedentary birds inhabiting open deciduous woodlands, traditional orchards, parks and old windbreaks. Breeding usually happens in the hole it has hacked out in a deciduous tree. It feeds mainly on large ants (particularly red wood ants) collected from the ground. The ‘laughing’ call of the European green woodpecker is particularly arresting. It rarely drums and when it does, it tends to do it softly.
