Originally, the goldfinch preferred the sunny perimeter of humid deciduous forests. More recently, it has started to adapt to man-made landscapes, such as orchards and parks. The key condition for the goldfinch is a rich vegetation with ample composites (thistles, dandelions). These plants produce the seeds upon which the goldfinch almost entirely depends. Unlike the adults the chicks are also fed insects during their development phase, as these contain the important proteins required for growth.
